Sustainability at Maldron Hotels

Maldron Hotel & Partners are in pursuit of improving our processes and practices to reduce any harmful impacts we are having on the environment. Living Green is Maldron Hotels & Partners' environmental movement that inspires care for our environment as a “Way of Life” throughout our hotels; both for our people and guests.

Green tourism

All Maldron Hotels have been accredited by Green Tourism, a certification program that provides a framework to achieve a sustainable business in the tourism industry. Over 80% of our hotels have achieved the Gold Award, highlighting how dedicated we are to diminishing our environmental impact.

Our initiatives

  • We have introduced a new suite of reports that are circulated to all our hotels on a monthly basis which in turn guide them on how they can better reduce their consumption of electricity, gas and water.
  • We have undertaken a significant re-lamping project across the public areas of all our hotels with over 35,000 bulbs changed to LED – we are working towards replacing all light bulbs across our hotels to LED.
  • We have a range of CHP’s in operation across our hotels with an additional 3 units recently installed. A Combined Heat and Power unit (CHP) is an energy-efficient technology that generates electricity and captures the heat that otherwise would be wasted to provide thermal energy. Hot water generated from the CHP replaces the need for boilers to be operating at the same time.
  • We are currently in the process of reviewing the effectiveness of our hotel BMS (Building Management Systems) so we can upgrade and replace as appropriate for maximum efficiencies.
  • Most of our hotels have installed tap and shower aerators. These devices control the flow of water without affecting pressure, resulting in significant reductions in the amount of water used. With the aerator in place there is an average saving of 5 litres of running water per minute from taps & also showers. We are working towards installing aerators on all taps & showers across our hotels.

We are committed to tracking all waste generation, focusing on renewable destinations and zero-to-landfill. We have also engaged with waste processing suppliers that give us the facility to accurately report the volume of food waste across our portfolio and we remain committed to reducing food waste by 15% per sleeper by 2026.

The average age of our hotel buildings is 15 years old which is young compared to many of our counterparts and as a result, makes us more energy efficient.

As part of the new build process we issue a set of ‘Employer Requirements’ to the developer/builder. In these requirements we outline that a standard of BREAM ‘very good’ is be achieved. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure and buildings.

We exclusively work with Patrick McCaul (Environmental Consulting Engineers) to make sure all hotels are designed, constructed and function as per our brand specific design.
